The Cyprus Legal System of Contract Law

                                      Contracts Law series

Cyprus contract law is based on The Contracts Law Act Chapter 149. The Act was introduced by the British Colonial Government of Cyprus in 1945 and it replaced the Ottoman Civil Code that was in force up to that Time.

The Contracts Law Act is almost an identical Copy of the Indian Contracts Act of 1872,  and that Indian Contracts Act of 1982 is a codification of the English contract law with modifications suitable for India.

The similarity between the two acts is the reason that Cyprus Lawyers and Cyprus Judges are referring  to Indian court decisions and Indian authorities for guidance when apply the Contracts Law Act Chapter 149.

Moreover the Contracts Law Act Chapter 149 in article 2 clearly states that the Act should be interpreted according to the rules of interpretation that are applicable in English contract Law.
